What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine rooted in one of the most ancient traditions of India; it is around 5,000 years old and it translates from Sanskrit as “the wisdom of life” or “the knowledge of longevity”.
As one of the world’s oldest systems of medicine known to humankind, Ayurveda has influenced other health care practices such as Chinese medicine, herbology, traditional Thai medicine system, and philosophies such as Buddhism and Yoga; it is considered a sacred science that evolved from a deep understanding of creation and the need of great sages to reveal the deepest truths of human physiology and health.
Ayurveda stresses the importance of understanding and aligning our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual components so they can function properly and thus use them correctly for our own good and that of others. This balance will lead us to efficient judgement, right values, true beliefs and a harmonious, happy and fulfilling life.
Initial assessment and treatments must be conducted and guided by an Ayurvedic consultant and are prescribed in a personalized matter taking into account the individual’s unique constitution, present context, disease, season, environment, body and mental strength. Some of the treatment methods include:
- Diet modifications
- Prescription of medicinal herbs
- Lifestyle and activity adjustments
- Guidance to self reflection and introspection work
- Customized recommendation of yoga & meditation practices
- Application of detoxification methods such as Ayurvedic massage
